Have you ever wondered how you could make your own cake toppers at home? Maybe you’ve thought about getting a Cricut but weren’t sure how it works? This week I’m using the Cricut Maker 3, which was kindly gifted to me by Cricut, to show you step by step how to make 3 different cake toppers.

Cricut Maker 3 Review

So before I go into detail about the toppers we should first talk about the Cricut Maker 3. I love crafting just as much as I love creating cakes and I am in love with this machine. Cricut make a range of cutting machines, each having the ability to cut different materials. The Cricut Maker 3 allows you to accurately cut over 300 different materials, including card stock, glitter card, material, leather, basswood and so much more. Plus it can not only cut but also has the ability to draw, score, deboss, engrave and create perforated and wavy lines. Making it the perfect tool for any cake maker.

Not only can you make cake toppers but what about making individual boxes for your cupcakes and macarons, labels and stickers for your packaging, plus bunting and decorations to match your cakes. The possibilities really are endless.

In the video I go through how you can use the Cricut Design Space, which is completely free to use with your Cricut machine, to create personalised designs. With a little bit of practice it is so easy to use and you can use the Design Space on your computer, tablet and mobile. In the video I also mention how you can customise existing designs within the Cricut design space, taking advantage of their monthly subscription; Cricut Access.

Glitter Cake Topper with your Cricut

How to make cake toppers with Cricut Maker 3

Who doesn’t love a glitter cake topper! In the video the first cake topper I create is a glitter ‘Happy 5th Birthday’ cake topper using the pink glitter card stock by Cricut. All you need to do is type out your text in the Cricut Design Space and with a few tweaks to combine all your letters so they cut out as one shape you can create the perfect message for the top of your cake. In the tutorial I go through everything you need to know to create your own Cake Topper.

Once you’re happy with your design you can cut then send it to your machine and cut the material of your choice.

Combining Different Materials with your Cricut

One thing that I love about the Cricut Maker 3 is you can combine different materials to make one project. In the video you will see by changing the colour of the shapes, letters or numbers Cricut knows you want to cut these on different materials. You can then select these in the options and all you need to do is follow the instructions on the screen loading the correct material in when it asks.

For the 2nd topper in the video I combine the glitter card stock in this amazing blue colour with the Cricut Smart sticker paper in blue. This gave such a great effect to the final cake topper and was so easy to do by creating 2 offset boarders from my original number 5 within the Cricut Design Space.

Acrylic Cake Topper with Vinyl on the Cricut

I love the final cake topper in the tutorial. When planning the video I knew I needed to use the vinyl to create an acrylic cake topper. This style of cake topper is so popular and gives such a modern feel to a cake.

I started with an acrylic disc that I purchased as a blank (this wasn’t cut using the Cricut Machine) and used some of the Cricut Vinyl. You can get permanent or removable vinyl (you can also get it to transfer onto clothes too). Just like in the other 2 I used the Cricut Design Space to lay out my text. I then cut this out from the vinyl and removed the excess.

You can then use the Cricut Tranfer tape to pick up the design and add it onto your acrylic blank topper.

You then have a beautiful topper to add into your cake. The vinyl also comes in so many different colours and you can change the design and fonts to match your cake perfectly.

I really love how easy the Cricut Maker 3 is to use and with so many different materials available the possibilities are endless. As well as the glitter card and the vinyl I used, Cricut have a range of card stocks, acetate and basswood that I think would also be perfect to use for toppers.

I’ve been using the Cricut Maker 3 but Cricut also have different ranges including the Joy and the Explore 3. If you’ve enjoyed the video and are thinking of getting a machine to use yourself take a look at what machine would work best for you for the projects you would like to create on their website.

I just want to thank Cricut for sponsoring this weeks video and let you know that even though the video was sponsored all the opinions in the video and in the blog are my own.
